Professional teeth whitening in London has a median published starting price of £375. Half of all practices that publish a price start between £300 and £440. The type of whitening makes the biggest difference to the price.
What professional whitening is
A dentist uses a stronger bleaching gel than you can buy in a shop. In the UK, only a registered dental professional can whiten your teeth with these products, such as a dentist, or a hygienist or dental therapist working on a dentist’s prescription. Whitening by a beauty salon or other non-dental business is illegal if the product contains more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. You can check that someone is registered on the General Dental Council register.
There are 2 main types:
- Home whitening. The dentist makes trays that fit your teeth and gives you the gel. The NHS says you wear the trays at home for around 2 to 6 weeks. Across London practices that publish a home whitening price, the median starting price is £380.
- In-practice whitening. The gel is put on your teeth at the practice, sometimes with a light. It is usually one visit of 1 to 2 hours. It costs more. Across about 65 practices that publish a price, the median starting price is £495. Some systems, such as Enlighten, combine home trays with a visit to the practice.

How long it lasts
The NHS says the effect may last around 3 years. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking make teeth stain again sooner. Some people use their home trays now and then to top up the colour. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or white fillings.
