Dentures are false teeth on a plate that you take out to clean. They are the cheapest way to replace missing teeth. Implants and bridges can cost thousands of pounds per tooth.

What dentures cost in London

The London median published starting price for dentures is £600. Half of all practices start between £380 and £825. The borough table on this page shows where dentures cost least and most.

These are starting prices, and “dentures from £350” can mean different things:

  • A partial denture fills one gap or a few gaps. It clips onto your own teeth. Acrylic (plastic) partials are the cheapest option.
  • A full denture replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. Prices are often per jaw, so a full upper and lower set can cost about twice the advertised price.
  • A cobalt chrome partial has a thin metal frame instead of a thick plastic plate. It is often more comfortable and lasts longer, and it costs more.
  • An implant-retained denture clips onto implants so it does not move. This costs much more, because it includes implant treatment. See dental implants in London.

When you call a practice, ask which type the price is for, whether it is per jaw or for a full set, and whether fitting appointments are included. Dentures usually take 4 or 5 appointments over several weeks.

NHS dentures

Dentures are available on the NHS. They are Band 3, the highest NHS charge, which is £332.10. This covers the whole course of treatment, however many appointments it takes. The charge is the same at every NHS practice in England.

Getting dentures that fit

With dentures, the skill of the dentist matters more than the price. A well-made denture is comfortable. A badly fitted one rubs or clicks, and many people stop wearing it. Ask the practice:

  • How many appointments will it take, and what happens if it does not fit the first time?
  • Are adjustments and relines (refitting the base) included, and for how long?
  • Which dental lab do you use?
  • Can I see the material you recommend?

Your gums will probably be sore for the first 2 weeks. Most people need at least one follow-up visit for an adjustment. This is normal.

Your mouth changes shape over time. Most dentures need relining or replacing after some years, often 5 to 10.

Other options

If you are replacing 1 or 2 teeth rather than a whole jaw, compare a denture with a bridge, which is fixed in place, or an implant, which costs much more but helps keep the jawbone. A partial denture is the cheapest of the three and needs the least work on your other teeth.
