Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable plate you take out to clean. They are the oldest solution to tooth loss and still the most affordable, which matters when the alternatives run into thousands per tooth. 1,326 London practices name denture work on their own websites, and 794 publish a price.

What dentures cost in London

The median advertised starting price across London is £600, with most practices between £350 and £825. The borough table below shows where that sits cheapest and dearest.

Treat those as starting figures, because “dentures from £350” can mean several different things:

• A partial denture fills one or a few gaps and clips to your remaining teeth. Acrylic partials are the cheapest option and sit at the bottom of the published range.
• A full denture replaces a whole upper or lower arch. Prices are usually quoted per arch, so a full set costs roughly double the advertised figure.
• Cobalt chrome partials have a slim metal framework instead of a thick acrylic plate. They are more comfortable and last longer, and they cost noticeably more.
• Implant-retained dentures clip onto implants so the plate does not move. These are the most expensive by a wide margin and are really implant treatment, not denture treatment. See dental implants in London.

When you ring round, ask which of those you are being quoted for, whether the price is per arch or for a set, and whether it includes the fittings. Dentures usually take four or five appointments over several weeks, and reline or adjustment visits afterwards are common.

NHS dentures

Dentures are available on the NHS, and if you can get an NHS appointment this is much the cheapest route. They fall into Band 3, the highest NHS charge band, which covers the whole course of treatment however many appointments it takes. The band charge is the same everywhere in England, so unlike private fees it does not vary by borough.

Getting a set that fits

Dentures are one of the treatments where the dentist matters more than the price. A well-made denture is unobtrusive; a poorly fitted one rubs, clicks and gets left in a drawer. Worth asking:

• How many appointments, and what happens if it does not fit first time?
• Are adjustments and relines included, and for how long?
• Which lab do you use, and is the work done in the UK?
• Can I see examples of the material you are recommending?

Expect some soreness for the first fortnight while your gums settle, and expect to go back at least once for an adjustment. That is normal, not a sign the denture is wrong.

Alternatives worth considering

If you are replacing one or two teeth rather than a whole arch, compare a denture against a bridge, which is fixed in place, or an implant, which costs considerably more but preserves jawbone. A partial denture is the cheapest and least invasive of the three, and the easiest to change your mind about later.
